Problematique
Traditionally, the university offers a general and theoretical knowledge that does not necessarily allow the immediate creation of wealth. The important role of education in fostering more entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviors, however, is becoming more widely recognized. The university is now challenged to become a key actor in development in producing useful knowledge and participating in the emergence of an entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurship refers to an individual’s ability to turn ideas into action and it is therefore a key competence for all young people as it helps them to be more creative and have more confidence in all they do.
The teaching of entrepreneurship is still not sufficiently integrated into the curricula of higher education institutions in Algeria. The few courses that are offered are often part of business and economics studies. The challenge is therefore to develop strategies that make entrepreneurship a desirable and feasible path for students of all disciplines.
The development and teaching of entrepreneurship is however significantly affected by the internal organizational structure and governance of institutions of higher education. There are no structures dealing with the question of entrepreneurship. Management practices do not encourage taking initiatives. In addition, entrepreneurship has no great interest to students. There are very few teachers in entrepreneurship. And too few use interactive teaching methods or project methods that are better suited to teaching entrepreneurship. How can we then develop a strategy for entrepreneurship at the university? What role should entrepreneurship play at the university? What structures to create? What should we teach? What role should business professionals play in the teaching of entrepreneurship? What type of relationships to establish with businesses? What are other actors who can step in to help develop entrepreneurship at the university? What are the practices that can motivate students to take initiatives?
To answer these questions and others, this seminar offers an opportunity for experts to present and analyze experiences of entrepreneurship development at the university in different countries. The aim is to see to what extent these experiences are transferable to the Algerian context. The seminar will be organized in the form of plenary sessions, workshops and testimonies from young students who have started their own business.
